Version 2 (V2) General FAQ

The Dinkytown.net Version 2 (V2) calculators use Java Applets to display the calculators. This is not the current version of the financial calculators and is currently being maintained with no future enhancements. Support and updates for the V2 content will continue through December 31st, 2014. It is highly recommended to upgrade to our V3 calculators as soon as possible. What are the terms of your license agreement?

Have your calculators been reviewed by the FINRA (formally the NASD)?

The majority of our financial calculators have been reviewed by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) through one or more of our clients. Whenever there is an issue, we have acted immediately to address it. The FINRA has a couple of items that they consider extremely important in regards to all financial calculators used by their members.

The first is the definition of "Rate of Return", "Expected Rate of Return" or any other similar term. In order to be compliant, all "Rate of Return" definitions need to include the relevant risk and relevant assumptions used by the calculations being illustrated. All of our calculators that include "Rate of Return" have a definition that has been reviewed and approved by the FINRA.

The second item of concern is that no rate of return on any calculator exceed 12%. The default rate of return for all of our calculators is capped at 20%. This means that no entry in a Rate of Return field can exceed 20%. For our clients that are members of the FINRA, we have an option that reduces this limit to 12%. With this optional limit in place, the calculators are fully compliant with the FINRA rules.

If, for whatever reason, your compliance department, the FINRA or the SEC finds an issue with one of our calculators, we will always do our utmost to resolve the issue immediately. FINRA or SEC issues are resolved at no additional charge. Depending on the issue, most compliance department concerns are covered at no charge as well. There may be a small custom development fee for enhancements or custom changes specific to your company.

Do I have to provide a link to you on our calculator pages?

No. As a matter of fact, we are one of the few companies that allow you to brand our calculators as your own. We require no visible reference to KJE Computer Solutions, LLC or link to our website once the calculator is loaded. We do require a copyright notice in the comments of the source code for each page that you publish and a brief copyright notice when the calculator loads.

Can I purchase these calculators on behalf of a client?

Yes, however all updates will be forwarded to the purchaser of the software. If you are not going to be providing long term support for a client's website, you may wish to have your client purchase the calculators directly from us. Your client can then send you access information to download the software so that you can handle the installation.

We have an outside resource deploying our website, how do you support their deployment?

We are happy to support just about any third party resource in the deployment of your calculators. All we request is that they you provide us with their contact information. You can include this additional information in the comments section of your order, via e-mail, or by just giving us a phone call. Your outside resource can then feel free to contact us directly with any questions or issues that may arise.

Which browser versions to you support?

For best results please use Explorer 7 and higher, Macintosh Safari, Mozilla FireFox or Google Chrome. All of these browsers provide excellent Java™ technology support, including quick load times and fast calculations.

We also test our applets on a wide variety of platforms. Operating systems supported includes Windows 2000, Windows XP Home & Professional, Windows Vista, Mac OS X, X Windows and Linux. The combination of our operating system and browser support covers over 98% of all internet use. We no longer actively test on Windows 98 or Windows ME, however our calculators continue to work on these platforms provided current browsers versions and the SUN Java Plugin are installed. If you are still using Windows 95, you are out of luck in so many ways I doubt our calculators are your top concern.

As of 12/31/2007 the Microsoft's JVM (MSJVM) is not longer supported. This version of Java, originally released in 1998 by Microsoft has not been updated since 2003, except for infrequent security patches. The official end of product life, set by Microsoft, for the MSJVM was 12/31/2007. For more information about the MSJVM end of life please see: http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/default.mspx.

Our latest release of the calculators will not load the MSJVM even if it is installed and set as the default version of Java for your computer. All browsers will automatically find and use SUN's Java Plug-in. If this plug-in is not installed, you will be prompted to download and install it. Netscape, Firefox and Internet Explorer will all automatically download and install the SUN Java plulg-in without leaving the web-page where the calculator is located (users will be prompted before any installation occurs, with the option to cancel it if desired).

I heard the Java™ programing language isn't supported on Windows XP and Vista, do your calculators work on Windows XP and Vista?

Yes - our calculators work great on Windows XP and Windows Vista! Java™ applets are fully supported by Windows and work great in all major browsers for windows. For best results please use Internet Explorer 7 and higher, Mozilla Firefox, Macintosh Safari or Google Chrome.

For more information on installing the SUN Plug-in please see: http://www.dinkytown.net/money/sunjvm.html

Additional Windows XP information can be found at: http://www.dinkytown.net/money/trouble.html#AA

Java™ technology will continues to be supported as an external plug-in, just like MacroMedia's Flash, Adobe PDFs, and many other 3rd party tools used to display content in web-browsers.

The development and enhancements of Microsoft's JVM (also referred to as the MSJVM) ended in 2003, with only security releases available after that time. The official end of product life for the MSJVM is 12/31/2007. For more information about the MSJVM end of life please see: http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/default.mspx .

Do your calculators work with Windows XP Service Pack 2?

Yes - the calculators work with XP SP2, just like they worked with XP SP1. The only difference is a small security message that appears if you install Java using their automatic installation routine (available at www.java.com). In the previous version of Windows XP, Java would install without any special prompting. In XP SP2, you need to click "download" from the security message that appears. You will only see this extra message when you install SUN's plug-in, it will not appear when you view the calculators with the plug-in already installed.

For more information on installing the SUN Plug-in please see: http://www.dinkytown.net/money/sunjvm.html

This security change doesn't affect people who already have Java installed on their computer, or if they install Java manually by downloading the install executable instead of using www.java.com's automatic install.

Once Java is installed on your PC, the applets will appear and run in XP SP2 just like they do in XP SP1 and XP without any warning messages.

Do your calculators work with Windows Vista and Windows 7

Yes - the calculators work with all versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7. The only difference is the security messages that may appear during a routine installation of the SUN Java Plug-in.

This security change doesn't affect people who already have Java installed on their computer, or if they install Java manually by downloading the install executable instead of using www.java.com's automatic install.

Once Java is installed on your PC, the applets will appear and run in Vista just like they do in XP.

Which web servers do you support?

Because all of our applets run on your visitor's browser, we do not require any special web-server processing or installation. That makes us compatible with virtually every web server in use today. This includes Apache, Microsoft -IIS, Netscape-Enterprise, Zeus, Rapidsite, thttpd, Tiger Shark and almost any other HTTP server on virtually any platform. Our calculators have been successfully setup on Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OS X, Linux and Unix.

What can I customize on the calculators?

Our calculators were designed to be extremely flexible and customizable. You can change the colors, fonts, page content, report content, add your own logos, navigation and much more. To see even more customization options, please take a look at our feature page and our FAQ on customization.

I heard Java™ applets are a security risk, are your financial calculators secure?

Our Financial Calculator Applets are very secure. The Java™ applets created by KJE Computer Solutions, LLC are compatible with all major browsers. For best results please use Internet Explorer 7 and higher, Mozilla Firefox, Macintosh Safari or Google Chrome. The memory and hardware security inherent in any version of the Java™ platform in these browsers does not allow an applet direct access to the client's computer hard drive, memory, printer or any other attached device. This is far more secure than any ActiveX, Visual Basic browser plug-in that can access your local computer's hardware directly, without your consent.

Further, no Java™ applet is able to access any remote server other than the one that the applet was launched from. Since the Java™ applets reside on your company's own webserver, there is no risk of the applet inappropriately accessing other servers and compromising system security.

In addition, the security to your visitors is enhanced by not having any of their sensitive data sent over the internet. All information entered into one of our Financial Calculator Applets is processed on by your visitor's browser. The applet will not send any inputed data back over the internet to be possibly intercepted or misused.

This combination of secure hardware and safeguarded visitor information provides for a very secure and stable content.
